I agree with Gene. You must manage this woman's expectations before you do anything else. I would not have said yes to her without her clear understanding and agreement to what may or may not be possible in this time period. I'm recalling Gary's old adage: "Underpromise and overdeliver!"

I would also agree with you that if someone is that hell-bent on "getting over it" in 2-3 sessions (enough to call it a priority) there are multiple issues at play, including a need to place blame on others for her inability to heal. Your description of the scenario screams "she needs to take responsibility" - for her own healing and her own progress. By your own description, I don't know if she will do this. In my opinion, it is essential that she demonstrate readiness to take full responsibility for her use of EFT before your work begins. Again, make sure you feel absolutely confident and comfortable with the expectations around the session BEFORE you dive in. This may involve picking ONE issue that you feel you can reasonably address in this time period - this may not be possible. Trust your intuition, and don't be afraid to tell her no. Good luck!

I agree with what you have written here. I think there are a number of EFT practitioner who give the rest of a bad name by using EFT on things they are not qualified for. My rule of thumb is, "If I am not qualified to work with it without EFT then I am not qualified to work with it with EFT."

In the example given in the article at no point was I diagnosing what was going on her body. We were only tapping on how her visualization of the movement was like. I was never having her do the movement for me. Many times I told here, "To take total responsibility for her body and that she should take the advice of her physical therapist before doing any types of exercise." I should have been much more clear in my writing.

Thanks for the feedback.

Gene,
I found this article plus "The Body has Information About Our Issues" extremely interesting. I work with physical systems constantly because I don't have a good memory of incidents to tap on while I can easily identify that I have pain in my heel, my lip is splitting, I'm experiencing allergy symptoms, etc.

Almost invariably some memory will come up that's loaded with emotional content or I'll just get an emotional statement that sticks in my mind -- until the whole concept is cleared. I identify this by muscle testing what percentage is finished. I haven't heard anyone else remark on using muscle testing simply to determine if a treatment has been completed.

However, I hadn't thought to break the process down in the way you've done. I am going to review this again because I think it's useful to see the five steps you've identified.

Thanks for so insightful a set of articles! Karylee

Dear Gene, I don't know the Laws or rules where you may live, but I was wondering. I graduated from Massage Therapy School years ago.I was a little surprised at an answer you gave a writer. I know in our field (MT)we are not allowed to Diagnose, or to give advise outside of our Training or "Scope of Practice" I realize EFT is very powerful. Many things can be helped or even cured. Even still, we live in a Litigious world where MANY would just Love a Lawsuit Payday. I have no idea as to your training besides EFT. I just know that if a stranger asked me "...
but I was wondering if I could use EFT to do the sit-ups/leg raises to build my muscles". This is one of those Slippery Slopes where, at least in my neck of the woods, To not inform the questioner That Only a Dr.could answer such a question. I am unaware of the Ability of EFT to "Build Muscles" Maybe I'm reading too much into this, I just know that my Professional Liability Coverage is Very Expensive, I don't need any Malpractice suits nor would I feel comfortable ethically, answering questions outside of my training. This is also definitely
an Ethical area. No wonder The Shrinks (MD.'s) feel so threatened. They would jump all over this with, "This is why we go to school for 20 years!"
We where always taught "When in doubt, refer it out" (To a M.D.) Yes, I am well aware That Gary says "to try it on EVERYTHING" (Just spent a fantastic week as his and his Daughter Tinas Guest at a filming of Veterans with PTSD) If I didn't know 1st hand how busy the poor guy is, I would e-mail him to get his opinion. Has anyone else wondered this point? ThanX, Debi

Dear Gene,

I really appreciated this article. I have clients who say they want to try one session only. I have a new client who said she will give her issue two meetings, maybe three since she had been in therapy for years (about 18!!) and she doesn't want to start any long term therapy. I saw her this last Friday for the first time. We only talked. I mean she only talked. You talk about multiple issues? This is the queen. I have a session with her next Friday. I don't even know where to start. I'm thinking of taking one small "hand able" issue just to be able to show some kind of result. What do you think?
Thanks,
Barbara
P.S. I really enjoy your Q&A's. Thanks.
